Intel Capital And MCI Management Supports Development of Nexcom nation-wide WiMAX network
10/10/2007

Sofia, BULGARIA –October 10, 2007 –Intel Capital, the global investment arm of Intel Corporation, and Polish financial group MCI Management, announced Wednesday a sizeable investment in local telco Nexcom-Bulgaria to directly support the development of a nation-wide WiMAX network to deliver a bundled solution of voice and wireless internet services.
By 2009, Nexcom plans to spend over EUR 20 mln to achieve the following primary objectives: (1) to provide national WiMAX coverage in Bulgaria within the next nine months; (2) to obtain a minimum 10% market share within the fixed phone and broadband services markets in Bulgaria; and (3) to introduce mobile WiMAX (802.16e) services throughout the country.
“The deal with Intel and MCI is among the first WiMAX investments in Eastern Europe and is of enormous strategic importance for Nexcom and all Bulgarian broadband internet subscribers”, Emil Nikolov, Co-founder and Chairman  of Nexcom Telecommunications, said. With such substantial support by both companies, Nexcom reaffirms its strong intention to continue the development of its network at accelerated rates to offer accessible and reliable services to broadband and phone subscribers in the country.
“Intel is in the forefront of WiMAX development worldwide and our investment in Nexcom is part of our strategy to support the spread of broadband Internet access, Marcin Hejka, Director, Strategic Investments CEE, Intel Capital commented. “We believe that WiMAX mass adoption has a great potential in Bulgaria. By investing here our goal is to provide Bulgarians with easy to access broadband Internet access which will boost both their competitiveness in the globalized labor market. At the same time on macroeconomic level the availability of WiMAX in Bulgaria could be a competitive advantage for attracting further investments”, Marcin Hejka added.
“Strong demand of Bulgarian market for wireless telecommunication services, excellent management team of Nexcom, technological and  marketing Intel support and also MCI experience in technology investments in transition economies represents a strong foundation of future success of the company", Bogdan Wiśniewski, Partner, MCI said.
“In the next nine months, Nexcom expects to provide a nation-wide coverage in Bulgaria, offering services to all cities with more than 50 thousand inhabitants.” Emil Nikolov said. The next cities to be covered by Nexcom are Varna, Blagoevgrad, Sliven, Shumen, Stara Zagora, Veliko Turnovo, Plovdiv, Yambol, Ruse, Lovech, Pleven, Gabrovo, Kurdjali, Haskovo, Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pazardik, Kazanlak, Kustendil, Razlog, Sandanski, Turgovishte, Razgrad, Dobrich and Pernik. “We shall continue working persistently to offer high quality and reliable integrated solutions that fully satisfy the communication needs of our subscribers”, Emil Nikolov added.
In October 2007 Nexcom-Bulgaria celebrates its first year since the start of its WiMAX network in Bulgaria. During the year Nexcom-Bulgaria has constructed a network now spanning over 10 cities in the country, and has started offering WiMAX services commercially in Sofia, Bansko, Burgas and many seaside and mountain resorts.
Nexcom initiated the preparation for the construction of its wireless WiMAX network at the end of 2005, following a successful bid for a WiMAX licence in the 3,5 GHz frequency. In the past two years Nexcom has invested in total renovation of its IP voice network and in the construction of a new data network to guarantee the quality and security of the services offered.  The company recently received a licence in the 26GHz frequency range to allow for a quick and cost effective construction of a network for backhauling (linking base stations), as well as for building connectivity to clients with high requirements for speed and capacity.
With the actual deployment of WiMAX, Nexcom customers receive wireless broadband internet at speeds of up to 10 Mbps and telephone service with a number from Nexcom Bulgaria’s own numbering plan.  In addition, corporate customers have the option of enrolling in a number of Nexcom-provided data transfer services, including urban and intercity connectivity, MAN and VPN services.
